Racing through earlier tracks will unlock more tracks as the player goes along. The game features both single and multiplayer racing, with the main portion consisting of a Season mode of 20 international tracks, nine of which are outdoor and eleven indoor. Unique additions for the Nintendo 64 title include use of a number of the console’s accessories, including the Rumble Pak, the Expansion Pak for hi-res mode, and the Controller Pak for saving data. This ability also led to what has become a staple of the Excite brand: The ability to perform stunts, which are activated through use of the R button, control stick, and L/Z buttons. And much like the original game, players can still control their Excitebikes in mid-air, pressing down to lower the front wheel for more hang time, and pressing up to pull back and allow a safer landing on slopes. And that’s just the beginning of where they began to shake things up.Įxcitebike 64, much like its predecessor, differs from other motorcycle racing games in that it isn’t meant to be an accurate simulation rather, it opts to create a more “exciting” atmosphere by using more exaggerated jumps and physics. Unlike the first game to bear the Excite name, Excitebike 64 borrowed an attribute which has been shared by numerous racing games that have appeared since: The ability to select one of several (in this case, six) distinct drivers, each of who possess their own names, characteristics, and attributes for handling their respective rides. Another addition is the R button’s ability to let the player drift around corners, so that they can maintain their speed. The turbo boost was instead moved to the controller’s L shoulder button or underside Z trigger, but just as in the original, abusing the turbo can cause the bike to overheat, momentarily taking you out of the race. The A button once again handled acceleration, but thanks to the greater number of buttons available on the N64’s unique controller, the B button held a new function by letting the player brake. Left Field would go on to innovate the Excite brand, stuck with much of what worked in the original Excitebike, but would also add a number of unique features and distinctions from its predecessor, forming what felt like a true 3D sequel to the original NES game.Īs with many games of the era, control was by the driver-friendly analog stick, though the control pad was still an option as well. This time, however, Nintendo passed the development chores on to an outside developer, Left Field Productions. Released in North America on April 30th, 2000 and followed by a June 23rd release for Japan and nearly a year wait for its June 8th, 2001 European release, the 16MB Excitebike 64 arrived near the end of the console generation of which the Nintendo 64 was a part. Though the legacy of the original Excitebike has continued in various forms since the original’s 1984 release, it was not until 16 years later that the game would see its first true sequel.

Kongregate hopes this curation will help spotlight quality games and address discoverability issues indie games commonly face. Unlike other storefronts such as Steam, Kartridge is a heavily curated store. The storefront is available via browser or desktop app and features both premium paid games and free browser-based titles. In November 2018 Kongregate opened Kartridge, a digital storefront focusing on independent games. Other features of the site such as the forums were also halted at the time as the Kongregate team worked on transitioning their internal titles to HTML5. On July 1, 2020, Kongregate announced the discontinuation of submissions as it prepared for the end-of-life for Adobe Flash Player by December 31, 2020, during which time the software required to run most of its games would be disabled in some browsers. In December 2019, Kongregate acquired Surviv.io, a free-to-play online game. She was replaced by COO Pany Haritatos as interim CEO. On May 2, 2019, Kongregate announced that co-founder and CEO Emily Greer was leaving the company. On October 5, 2017, Kongregate acquired Chicago-based Synapse Games, the developer of Animation Throwdown. We're also going to be investing in first-party development and potential acquisitions of our own within the games space," said CEO Emily Greer. "we'll be deepening our investment in several areas, from marketing/marketing tech to platform engineering. Planned as part of the deal was a change in focus from hosting third-party games to driving game development as well. This followed MTG's recent purchase of 51% of Hamburg-based online game developer InnoGames in 20. On June 20, 2017, Kongregate announced it had closed a deal to be acquired by Swedish entertainment company Modern Times Group for $55 million. BattleHand and The Trail also were voted as Best of 2016 by Apple, and Animation Throwdown and The Trail were voted Best of 2016 by Google Play. In 2016, Kongregate received Apple Editors' Choice for BattleHand and The Trail, and the company received Google Play Editors' Choice for Animation Throwdown and AdVenture Capitalist. This enabled games to take advantage of microtransactions through the Steam store for titles otherwise normally free-to-play. It also simplified for players data sharing between these platforms. Kongregate announced plans in October 2016 to help developers bring their games to the Steam distribution platform with an updated software development kit to make it easy to port games between Kongregate's web and mobile platforms as well as the Steam platforms (Windows, macOS, and Linux). Some of the developers benefited by this fund included Synapse Games, RedPoint Labs, and Making Fun. The money was used to financially support free-to-play mobile game developers by helping them test and market their games. In early 2013, Kongregate announced a $10 million fund devoted to mobile gaming, and as part of this new program, the former Zynga executive Pany Haritatos was hired to oversee it. The Kongpanions that players collect can be used in some games on the site. These creatures often take the form of animals or anthropomophized objects. In 2014, the site introduced digital creatures called Kongpanions, which act as a site-wide achievement system and metagame. On July 23, 2010, GameStop announced an agreement to acquire Kongregate. Īs of July 2008, Kongregate had raised around $9 million in capital from investments by Reid Hoffman, Jeff Clavier, Jeff Bezos, and Greylock Partners. In December of the same year, the site was formally opened to the public. The site formally entered the beta testing phase on March 22, 2007. During this time, game developers and players tested the site's interface and functionality. Kongregate was released on October 10, 2006, by siblings Emily and Jim Greer into an alpha testing phase, which lasted until December 2006. The portal was closed to new user submissions in 2020, though previously submitted games remain. On the web portal, users could upload Adobe Flash, HTML5/ JavaScript, Shockwave, Java, and Unity games with integrated high scores and achievement badges. Kongregate is the home for several idle/clicker games, including Adventure Capitalist, Crusaders of the Lost Idols, and Anti-Idle: The Game. The website's portfolio of games spans a wide range of genres. It was purchased by GameStop Corporation in 2010 before being acquired by Modern Times Group MT AB in 2017. The company also publishes games for PC, mobile, and home consoles. Its website features over 110,000 online games and 30+ mobile games available to the public. While D&D plodded modestly along, any number of other fantasy properties leapt off the page and into mainstream culture. But while it was the basis of a 1980s cartoon and a mixed bag of video games, D&D remained at its heart a publishing business, selling a set of lavishly illustrated hardcover rulebooks supplemented by novels and prewritten adventures. Wizards of the Coast's Seattle-area office features fantastical murals. … when I got a look at the numbers, I was like, ‘Yeah, this is a business I want to be a part of.’” “When Chris and I had our first conversation about this role,” says Williams, who replaced Cocks at Wizards in February, “I thought they had passionate fans, and that’s a good place to start from. An activist campaign by Alta Fox Capital Management this year unsuccessfully sought to spin off Wizards. “ D&D is, I think, the poster child for our brand blueprint strategy,” says Chris Cocks, who provided one signal of the division’s importance when he was promoted from Wizards president to Hasbro CEO early this year. And it is part of a phenomenally profitable unit, with Wizards accounting for 72% ($547 million) of Hasbro’s operating profit for 2021. But D&D is growing fast, with revenue up a reported 35% in 2020 from 2019 and more introductory D&D products sold in 2021 than when they were released in 2014. That is a small slice of the $1.3 billion in net revenue that Wizards of the Coast posted last year and looks even more modest next to Hasbro’s $6.4 billion. Arpiné Kocharyan, a UBS analyst, estimates that D&D is now responsible for $100 million to $150 million in annual revenue. In all, Wizards of the Coast estimates that 50 million people have played the game since 1974, and while Hasbro does not break out D&D as a segment in its public filings, it noted that 2021 represented the game’s ninth consecutive year of growth. Both properties sport official D&D licenses from Wizards of the Coast. Next year will see the release of a blockbuster D&D video game in Baldur’s Gate III-the latest in a series that has sold more than 5 million copies-plus a big-budget movie in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. Celebrities including Joe Manganiello, Deborah Ann Woll and Vin Diesel have sung the game’s praises, and D&D books frequently pop up on bestseller lists. Helped along by a prominent role in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, 24% of D&D players are between 20 and 24 years old, with 18% in the 25-to-29 bracket and another 18% 30 to 34. And surprisingly for a game that’s about to turn 50, the players skew young. In fact, around 40% of D&D players are now female, according to a 2020 study Wizards of the Coast conducted with market research firm Newzoo. To read more about Eurystheus and the reasons for Hercules' Labors, see Further Resources. His struggles made Hercules the perfect embodiment of an idea the Greeks called pathos, the experience of virtuous struggle and suffering which would lead to fame and, in Hercules' case, immortality. By the end of these Labors, Hercules was, without a doubt, Greece's greatest hero. Fortunately, Hercules had the help of Hermes and Athena, sympathetic deities who showed up when he really needed help. He prayed to the god Apollo for guidance, and the god's oracle told him he would have to serve Eurystheus, the king of Tiryns and Mycenae, for twelve years, in punishment for the murders.Īs part of his sentence, Hercules had to perform twelve Labors, feats so difficult that they seemed impossible. However, one Olympian, the goddess Hera, hated him before he was even born and strived. He was favoured by many gods of Olympus, including Athena, Apollo, and Hermes. The son of Zeus and a descendant of Perseus, Heracles was destined to be a great Hero. When he awakened from his "temporary insanity," Hercules was shocked and upset by what he'd done. The 12 Labours of Hercules/Heracles are some of the most impressive tales in Greek Mythology. In a confused and angry state, he killed his own wife and children. The Artisans’ Guild’s work is displayed and sold annually at the Eco-Art Show held each November since 2010 at the Marion Palace Theatre. “This year, examples of our creativity will be used as decorations at the Celebrate Marion Gala for MarionMade.” “At the library, our individual artistic skills are exhibited to show how various art mediums are used to create art,” said Kume. Each ornament is designed and handcrafted by the local members. “We always are looking to learn something new by inviting other artists to be guest speakers at our meetings.”Įach year, the Artisans display their unique and creative projects at the Marion Palace Theater in the form of the annual Christmas tree in the lobby and in the window of the Marion Public Library. “Preserving and promoting any art form, especially handcrafted, is our goal,” said Kume. “One of our past members, Susan Bennett, recognized this bond and created a rose in a circle, the circle of friendship, to be our logo.”Īrtisans’ Guild members share and educate each other in quilting, crafting, Zentangle, sewing, quilling, card making, painting and many other skills. “Strong friendships have grown out of this organization from the very beginning,” said Kume. One of the most notable members-and Past President, 1968-1970-was Mary Ellen Withrow. The current membership includes both native Marionites, some who have made Marion their home, and some who have moved away and come back to be an Artisan. In addition to the contribution check, a truck full of gifts is donated.įrom its inception in the 1960s, the objective of the Artisans has been to revive and perpetuate the love and appreciation of the arts and crafts. In 2018, that donation was $1,700 and included two raffles of large quilts made by members.Įach December, the Artisans request a list of what the shelters need–everything from cleaning supplies to coffee–as well as a list of women and children at the shelter so that Christmas gifts–toys and clothing–can be provided for the shelter residents. The Artisans’ Guild holds small fund raisers throughout the year and donates all of the proceeds from their booth at the Eco-Art Show to Marion’s homeless shelters. The Artisans’ Guild is not a service club, rather it is an arts enrichment program, explained Kume, “Our objective is to keep the appreciation of arts and crafts alive.” “Our members donate their time, all of the supplies, and their talent to this effort,” said Cindy Kume. One of their biggest projects is raising money for the Marion Homeless Shelters, which they do by creating and selling artwork. The group meets monthly at Marion’s First Church of the Nazarene. Members of the Artisans’ Guild are creating 50+ unique centerpieces for the formal dinner at the Celebrate Marion Gala, showcasing a wide variety of their members’ talents, including Zentangle candles, quilling, beadwork, floral arranging, and several other styles. “We are pleased to be creating the centerpieces for MarionMade’s Celebrate Marion Gala in June and helping to decorate the Palace for the event.” “The purpose of the Artisans’ Guild is to promote the arts and fine crafts in any medium, as well as fellowship among artists,” said Kume. Today, membership is still by invitation and includes 50 women, both retirees and active community members. In its early years, the membership was comprised of housewives and socialites. The Artisans’ Guild dates back to 1962 when it was founded by Mabel Probst Stone. While the group is probably best known for their annual decorating of the enormous Christmas tree in the lobby of the Palace Theatre, they are also a major supporter of Marion’s homeless shelters. Quilting, crafting, Zentangle, sewing, quilling, card making, painting and other fine arts are all in the wheelhouse of Marion’s Artisans’ Guild. |
